ALTERNATIVE AUGMENTATIVE COMMUNICATION

High Tech and Low Tech

Speech is not the only way that humans are able to communicate! It is never too early or late to begin expressing yourself with AAC. In fact, research shows that incorporating AAC into communication does not reduce verbal language skills and in many situations, can improve it!

AAC may benefit...

-children who have delayed speech/language development

-Autistic individuals who are fully or partially non-verbal, or who may rely on AAC in certain situations.

-children/adults who are verbal but can be difficult to understand

-adults with degenerative diseases such as ALS

-individuals who lose speech/language skills following stroke/TBI.

The SLP will work with you, your child, or family member who may benefit from incorporating picture-based (such as PECS®), printed visuals, and/or speech-generating devices (SGDs) to meet their unique communication needs. The SLP will help to identify alternate access methods to using a device if motor movement of arms/hands is restricted.

The SLP will train the client and family members for use of AAC systems.

The SLP can also ensure that the device is used to support literacy and academic development in the classroom.

I have experience working with Tobii Dynavox Snap™ Core First®, PRC LAMP Words for Life and Unity®, Saltillo WordPower™, on both dedicated devices and iPads.
