PRE-LITERACY AND LITERACY

Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness, Phonics

Believe it or not, literacy development begins when a child is in the womb! Young children who have a speech or language difficulty are more likely to have difficulty when they are learning to read and write. The SLP can help support critical literacy skills such as:

  • joint attention: sharing attention with your child, for example, looking at the same pictures together in a book

  • phonological awareness: the ability to recognize, distinguish, and manipulate sounds of a language

  • print awareness: recognizing that words on a page represent the words we say, distinguishing written words from pictures in a book
